'OAR'SOME results at the Nationals!

Richard Challoner and Surbiton High School travelled to Battersea Park to contest the Indoor rowing National titles. The event was bigger and better than last year, and the boys and girls were eager to compete.

The Boys were hoping to build on last year's fourth places and this year, come back with a medal. Tom Sankey inspired by last year, joined a local rowing club and has trained towards this event. His hard work was rewarded with a silver medal in the year 8 race. Other successes were David Ginty in year 11 who was placed in 11th place. Well done to all the boys.

There was some very tough racing  for the girls also with very close results in all categories and all girls should be commended for their excellent results. Of particular note are Lizzie McDonald in Year 8, Su Carr and Alice Meadows in Year 10 and Ellie Roberts in Year 12 - all of who came in the top 10 for their categories.

Well done to everyone! The Girls look forward to competing again next year and to hopefully bring some medals back to Surbiton!

Richard Challoner and Surbiton High School to represent at the Nationals

(KSSP - Secondary Indoor Rowing Championship Report 2009/10)

The Kingston Indoor Secondary Schools Rowing Championships hosted by Chessington Community College on Thursday 11th February was a great success. This year's rowing event was the biggest that Kingston has had in many years with over 100 competitors from Coombe Girls, Surbiton High School, Richard Challoner, Chessington Community College, Hollyfield, Coombe Boys and Kingston College.

Olympic rowing gold medallist Mark Hunter attended the Indoor Rowing event along with the Mayor of Kingston. Hunter, who won Olympic gold in Beijing in the lightweight double sculls and also a former London Youth Games competitor, was impressed with what he saw.

There are many people that need to be thanked for their help on the day and in the lead up to the event.  Steven Jenes at CCC for sorting the venue and arranging the rowers.  Both fairly crucial.  Thanks to Neil Mears from St. Phillips School for allowing us to borrow the rowers.  Richard and his IT team from CCC who bailed us out when we crashed after the first few races!  Liz Foster for bringing the feel of the London Youth Games to the event.  And the students from Kingston College who were our judges, commentators and even competitors at some point of the day!  Thank you all.

Richard Challoner School won the overall title for boys and Surbiton High School won the girls' title These teams will represent Kingston at the National Indoor Rowing Competition on March 16th. Good Luck to both teams! To view full results click here.

Challoner challenge for medals at the Nationals

After winning the Kingston Indoor Rowing competition Richard Challoner School were invited to enter the National Schools Indoor Rowing competition held at Battersea Evolution on Tuesday 17th March.

The boys have only just become involved in indoor rowing and after school trials, seven individuals were selected to represent the school at the National competition. The boys had to row for a set time (applicable to their particular year group) The venue held 80 indoor rowing machines and the boys participated in some nail biting races, just missing out on the medals by less than two metres! Highest National placings were achieved by Tom Sankey (Year 7) and Robin Landi (Year 8) who achieved fourth places in their respective races. Well done to all the boys who participated.

Kingston Secondary Schools Indoor Rowing Champs 2008/9

Wednesday 11th March 2009 saw the first Kingston Secondary Schools Indoor Rowing Championships take place at Chessington Community College.  In collaboration with London Youth Rowing the Kingston School Sport Partnership (KSSP) held races for 11-16 year olds both boys and girls.

The races held extra importance as representatives from the Active Kingston team were recruiting for their London Youth Games Squad, and also Molesey Rowing Club were looking for potential rowers to join their Junior Initiative.

Michael Skinner, the KSSP Competition Manager was delighted with the outcome of the day.  He said "with our borough being located on the banks of the River Thames we have a fantastic opportunity to offer rowing. With this being the first time we have held the event I'm hoping it will open the eyes of the young people as to what is out there and by having the links to the local clubs children may choose to pursue the sport further."

At the end of a fantastic afternoons action Richard Challoner were declared Boys Overall Champions and hosts Chessington were the Girls Overall Champions.
