Fulham Football Club warmly welcomed the boys and girls of the qualifying teams for the KSSP primary schools football finals recently, to their training ground in Motspur Park.
The Girls Competition
This competition was exciting to watch from start to finish. The earlier rounds of matches allowed all schools to settle their nerves and get used to the surroundings. All teams had picked up points by the second round, but the final round would decide who the semi finalists would be. All pupils were a credit to their schools, respect and fair play was the order of the day, implemented by the Fulham referee's.
Green lane Primary and Coombe Hill Juniors met in a highly competitive final on pitch 1. Both teams had their share of possession, but Green lane converted a good chance to take the lead. The second half led to great pressure by Coombe Hill, whose tactic was to play in their opponents half of the pitch, but they were unable to capitalise on their chances. Green Lane girls seem to decide that the best form of defence was to attack, which they did at every opportunity. Eventually, Coombe Hills' pressure paid off with a free kick just outside the penalty box, with ten seconds on the clock. It was a crucial chance to stay in the match and force the penalty shoot out. Up steps Coombe Hills captain to take the responsibility and fires the ball into the roof of the net! We go to penalties.
Parents, teachers and spectators were now the ones to be nervous as the penalty shoot out began. Both teams scored some and missed some, but Green Lane took the lead going into the final round. It meant that if Green Lane scored their next penalty they would win the competition. Up steps the final taker, she placed the ball down, took a few steps back then slotted the ball into the side netting! Goal! But the referee calls her back, the goal is disallowed as the penalty was taken before the whistle and therefore, the goal keeper is not ready. This means the penalty must be retaken. Everyone was feeling the pressure around the pitch, but one, the young penalty taker, who stepped up to ball and drove it into the back of the net.
Congratulations to Green Lane Primary who win the girl's competition.
The Boys Competition
This was an incredibly closely contested competition this year. All six schools came fully prepared for the finals at Fulham and were the fortunate ones to compete inside the 'dome'. The playing surface was in excellent condition and encouraged teams to pass the ball around. Some teams opted to keep possession, whilst the other schools proved to be more direct in their play. Tactics and strategies aside, it all came down to chances converted. This was proving difficult as a number of goal keepers and strong defenders were playing well and preventing these opportunities.
There were a handful of wins, with other schools taking points for a draw. The second round was just as cagey, with opponents not leaking goals and attempting to create opportunities in front of goals. Often when a goal was scored, the opposing school answered it again with an equaliser. However, St. Mary's Primary and Latchmere Primary had picked up some crucial points to move toward the top of the table. The next two rounds were exactly the same as the last, but Coombe Hill Juniors had now joined St. Mary's Primary near the top.
It came down to the final round and four of the six schools were in contention for a medal spot. Even at the end of the competition no one knew who would be top of the table, everyone had to wait for the points to be totalled and presented at the end.
Congratulations to St. Mary's Primary School for winning the competition, they will represent Kingston primary schools in the next round of the competition.
Latchmere Primary and Coombe Hill Juniors shared second place.

It was a cold but sunny day on the Tuesday of the football finals. The winning finalists from the six Kingston clusters met at Fulham FC's training ground to decide the borough girls' and boys' champions. It was great to see a number of familiar schools back again, but also fantastic to see new faces too.
It was a low scoring competition with teams defending tightly all morning. Many goalkeepers stood out for protecting their goals brilliantly. Both competitions, boys and girls, proved to be close games. There were lots of drawn games or games won by one or two goals, with teams having to chase the win by leaving gaps in defence.
In the girls' competition King Athlestan Primary were gradually winning all their games and finding themselves out in front in the league table. It soon became a battle for second and third place with four contenders in the running. Robin Hood Primary had a strong finish with two more wins in a row, but lost their final game. There was now a chance for Christ Church Juniors or Fern Hill Primary to take second place. However, they both played against each other in the last game of the competition. Whoever won would be runner's up, in an exciting finish to the tournament both keepers could not be beaten leading to a nil-nil draw. Therefore, allowing Robin Hood Primary to come second. Congratulations to the girls' of King Athlestan Primary school for being borough champions!
In the boys' competition it was an even closer battle for the top spot. As the competition moved on it was obvious that all teams were dropping points with a loss and on many occasions drawing games. By the fourth round of the competition three boys' teams were making their way up the league table; Our Lady Immaculate, St. Joseph's and Fern Hill. Fern Hill drew one game and lost to St. Joseph's meaning that they had to finish strongly with two consecutive wins to come out on top. Our Lady Immaculate and St. Joseph's had a great opportunity to win the competition but with both teams drawing two games each, one of those against each other, it prevented either of them coming first. On a count back ruling St. Joseph's took runners up, with Fern Hill winning the competition with three wins, a draw and one loss. Congratulation to the boys' of Fern Hill Primary school for being borough champions!
The KSSP would like to thank Andrew Watt and his team of coaches at Fulham FC for hosting a fantastic competition again this year.
