In February, our Young Leaders from the Borough Leadership Academy met up to take part in a Gugafit session with Dan White and to catch up with events that they have been involved in this term.
From Multi Skills festivals to High 5 tournaments, the leaders have been putting their L & V skills into action, assisting schools to achieve their 5 hour offer! Whilst developing their subject knowledge, the pupils had lots of fun trying out different games and events which will no doubt be just as much fun for their prospective pupils.
Many thanks to Dan White of Gugafit for his continued enthusiasm in spreading the 'Guga' bug and also to Dan White from the Youth Sports Trust who came to discuss L & V at nationwide events.

Whilst an element of shyness was evident at the beginning of the camp - it didnt take long after some Strictly Come Dancing, team building activities, official courses in Rugby, High 5 Netball, Volleyball & Football for the leaders to feel comfortable with eachother!
They were happy doing the Cha Cha Cha together and actually looking really good! Eat
your heart out Darren & Lilia!! Sandra Blenkinsop & Gemma Fergueson will be featuring
in next years show!!

The leadership academy is now is its second year. Our first leadership academy was held over a series of evenings and proved a big success with 52 leaders developing their organisational, umpiring and refereeing skills. This year, the Academy is being held over 2 consecutive days, during October half term. Leaders are carefully selected to take part in quality sessions comprising of both theory and practical work. They will be taught 'what makes a good leader' and the skills to be authoratitive as an official, how to stop a game, apply rules and keep good order in the game for both 5/6 aside football and high five netball, rugby and volleyball, as well as how to run and organise multi skills festivals and fun events for children. The leaders will then be used by PE departments & SSCo's to umpire and referee cluster competitions coming up over the year. There will also be opportunities to volunteer to referee local little league matches in Kingston.

It is run out of school hours as a regular opportunity in which young people aged 14 - 19 years can develop their leadership skills and be supported to be deployed in a wide range of opportunities as active volunteers.
What should the academy do?
Provide regular contact (face to face or virtual) programme of support and training that reflects the needs of its members and the variety of roles that they may be undertaking, for example, coaching, officiating, events, team manager, sports administration and IT/Media. It should also provide information on where and how you can volunteer and give opportunities to meet other volunteers and share experiences.
