Year 7 Girls Volleyball Championships 2010


U12 Chessington Girls win Kingston borough finals

Chessington Community College girls won the 1st u12 Kingston Borough Secondary Schools Volleyball finals last Tuesday held at Tolworth Girls School but it was not easy! The event hosted 12 teams from 6 schools (Coombe Girls, Holy Cross, Hollyfield, Tiffin Girls, Tolworth Girls and Chessington CC) and produced many close games with high levels of noise and excitement throughout the afternoon.

The teams were split into two groups for the initial part of the tournament with the top two teams from each group progressing into the semi finals. The 1st Semi Final was between Holy Cross 1 (winner group A) and won 22-14 against Tolworth 1 (runner-up group B). The 2nd Semi Finals was between Chessington 1 (runner-up group A) and won 23-14 against Tiffin 2 (winner group B). The 3rd and 4th play off was narrowly won 21-9 by Tiffin 2.

The penultimate match was between Chessington and Holy Cross having both qualified from the preliminary Group A matches with Holy Cross beating Chessington 21-16. The final provided some great entertainment for the many parents and teachers cheering on their sides but it was Holy Cross who was taken by surprise by Chessington's determination and consistency and produced a convincing 21-17 victory.

The afternoon finished with sporting medals and certificates handed out to the top four teams presented by Mike Skinner (Competitions Manger for Richmond and Kingston Schools and Great Britain 5000 meters Sporting Champion). Richmond Volleyball Schools Coordinator David Rijvers commented, the u12 girls finals was a great success adopting the 'Dutch Circulation Mini Volleyball (CMV) game model. Over the course of the four weeks Richmond Volleyball coaches engaged with over 100 young people to prepare the teams. All the teams learned 3 touch volleyball (dig, set, spike), resulting in some great rallies. Thanks go to all the school teachers and venue host and to all the schools sport leaders who helped on the day as scorers and referees making the event a great success. Congratulations to all the girls for an outstanding event.

Congratulations to Holy Cross Girls who topped the 3rd u14 Kingston Schools Borough Volleyball Finals held at Tiffin Boys School. This year's competition involved 70 young people and for the first time involved all six (Hollyfield, Tolworth Girls, Holy Cross, Tiffin Girls, Chessington and Coombe Girls) secondary borough schools.


The finals consisted of two pools of six teams with the top two teams progressing to the Semi-Finals. In Group A three teams (Coombe B, Chessington A and Holy Cross A) won four matches but it was Chessington and Holy Cross with higher points difference who advanced to the Semi-Finals. In Group B the top two challengers were Tolworth A and Coombe A both with four match wins. In the 1st Semi-Final Coombe A started favourites coming top in Group B but it was Holy Cross A setting the pace and won the game by 21 to 17 points. In the 2nd Semi-Final Chessington A were favorites topping Group A and only just edged Tolworth A by 1 point to reach the borough final (23 to 23). The final was a highly competitive match and Holy Cross showed more consistency and patience in their game to become worthy champions winning the match by 25 to 17. CCC Girls performed very well given that they were the youngest team in the competition all from year 8 (u13).


Richmond Volleyball Schools Coordinator commented, the girls finals was a great success with highest number of teams being there and the coaching sessions was well attended. All the teams learned 3 touch volleyball (dig, set, spike), resulting in some great rallies. Thanks goes to all the school teachers and venue host and to all the schools sport leaders who helped on the day as scorers and referees making the event a great success.

U16 Volleyball Champions - Coombe Girls


Tiffin Boys School hosted the best of the best (KS4 & KS3) year 10 and 11 Kingston Girls Schools Volleyball Championship Finals and saw on the day over 60 young girls competing for their schools.


Six school teams participated (Hollyfield, Tiffin Girls, Holy Cross, Chessington CC, Coombe Girls A and Coombe Girls B) and played each over once over 15 minute matches. It was a highly competitive competition and Coombe A proved worthy borough champions dominating all their matches and taking maximum points. Coombe B fought hard throughout and finished 2nd only losing to Holy Cross, and CCC finished 3rd. Hollyfield Girls performed very well given that they were the youngest team in the competition all from year 9 (u14).


Commenting on the success of the volleyball programme Richmond & Kingston Competitions Manager Mike Skinner said, 'We are very pleased with Richmond Volleyball and their commitment and enthusiasm delivering a fun competitive programme. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the competition and demonstrated how quickly the students have learned the game. Richmond Volleyball Schools Coordinator commented, 'We were delighted with the high attendance at the 5 weeks coaching sessions and the high standard of play with all teams playing 3 Touch which resulted in some great rallies. Students as well as playing were also refereeing games furthering their knowledge of the game and developing their leadership skills. Thanks goes to all the school teachers, Kingston Schools Sport Partnership team, venue host and sport leaders who helped on the day as scorers and referees making the event a great success'.


Many of the girls have been selected to represent Richmond Volleyball in the forthcoming National Junior u14, u15 and u16 competitions. The Premier league 4 Sport training sessions are held on Mon - 4.15pm (Chessington School), Tues - 4.30pm (Epsom Ewell High School), Thurs - 4.30pm (Coombe Girls), Fri - 5pm (London Oratory), Sat - 10am (Tiffin Boys School), Sun - 4.30pm (Whitton School).

CCC winners - U16 Kingston Schools Volleyball Cup 2009/10

Chessington Community College (CCC) Boys won the Borough Volleyball Cup with an impressive hard-fought victory over Coombe Boys in the u16 Kingston Schools Finals held at Richard Challoner School.


10 teams were divided into two groups of five playing the 4v4 super mini game and each team played each other once with the top two teams from each group progressing to the semi-finals. In group A Chessington A can on top (won 4 matches) followed by Southborough High A with 3 match wins against Hollyfield B, Richard Challoner B, and Tiffin Boys A. In group B it was Coombe Boys who can on top (won 4 matches) and Hollyfield A 2nd with three match wins against Richard Challoner A, Chessington B and Southborough High B.


The 1st semi-final proved a close battle with Coombe A beating Southbough High A by 22 points to 17 and in the 2nd Semi-final Chessington A convincingly won (27 to 15) against Hollyfield A. The two heavily favourite teams both managed to get to the finals and its was not disappointment. It was to be a close encounter and nearly caused an upset. On the day it was Chessington who were worthy winners overcoming a difficult team. The 3rd and 4th play-off match was won by Southborough High A against Hollyfield A.


Both finalists (Chessington and Coombe) will now progress to South London Volleyball Finals on Monday 5th February held at Tiffin Boys Schools were they will meet the top two teams from Richmond and Croydon and test their skills again. Commenting on the success of the competition, Kingston PDM said, 'We are very pleased with Richmond Volleyball and their commitment and enthusiasm delivering a fun competitive programme. All the students demonstrated how quickly the students learned the game and how much fun they had.

All the teams played consistently 3 touch volleyball with some great rallies. We would also like to express thanks to all the schools teachers, sport leaders who helped making the events a great success.


Thanks to the schools Richmond junior volleyball section has over 60 boys and girls attending training regularly and competing in National Junior competitions from u18, u16, u15 and u14 age groups. We would also like to express thanks to all the school teachers, venues and sports leaders who helped make the 12 weeks winter volleyball programme a great success.
