PE, School Sport & Young People

PESSYP

Due to the Govenmental re-structuring of Sports Partnerships the collection of PESSYP data is no longer compulsory. Schools may wish to collect and use this data to inform planning and reward systems.

PESSYP 2009/10

Kingston's success was celebrated early in October with the official results were announced. 48% of all children in Kingston are participating in at least three hours of PE and School Sport per week. The focus has shifted slightly for schools, in that we are now aiming to offer each child at least three hours of School Sport. This breaks down as PE (2 hours) and clubs (1 hour) per week as a minimum. This will contribute at least three hours to the governmental target of 5 hours activity per week.

KSSP results have increased from last year and fall in-line with what is expected nationally.

A PESSYP survey is compelted annually so accurate data collection of children's participation in extra-curricular activities, tournaments and leadership is of the utmost importance.

For more information regarding the survey, see the survey website or visit PESSYP Survey Explained.

The schools involved have found that developing PE and school sport has contributed to a number of areas of school improvement, including attendance, behaviour, attitudes to learning and attainment. They have also evidenced a growth in pupils' self-esteem and confidence and a greater commitment to a healthy, active lifestyle.

PESSYP Strands

Sports Colleges

The programme helps schools, in partnership with private sector sponsors and supported by additional Government funding, to establish distinctive identities through their chosen specialisms (i.e. sport) and achieve their targets to raise standards.
School Sport Partnerships School Sport Partnerships are families of schools that received additional funding from the Government to come together to enhance sports opportunities for all.

Professional Development

In order to ensure high-quality PE and school sport, teachers and others need development and support. The PE and School Sport Professional Development programme seeks to ensure that they have the tools and expertise needed to inspire and engage children and young people.

Step-Into-Sport

The project is delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, Sport England and Sports Leaders UK. It provides a clear framework of coordinated opportunities at a local level to enable young people aged 14 to 19 to begin and sustain an involvement in leadership and volunteering through sport.

Club Links

The main aim of the Club Links workstrand is to strengthen links between schools and local sports clubs and by doing so increase the number of children who are members of accredited sports clubs.

Gifted & Talented

The principle aim of the Gifted and Talented strand of PESSCL is to improve the identification of, support and provision for gifted and talented pupils in Physical Education and School Sport.

Sporting Playgrounds

Children spend around 25 per cent of the school day in the playground. Traditionally playgrounds are often dull, uninspiring and intimidating for many children. In many cases, a relatively small number of children dominate playground activities which are exclusive to the majority. Therefore, by tackling inactivity, boredom and poor behaviour, improving playtimes can have a significant impact on school life.

Swimming
Swimming is not only a healthy activity, but also acts as an essential life-skill. Swimming and water safety are statutory activities at KS2, designed to ensure children are able to swim unaided over a distance of at least 25 metres.
